911 and compliance
911 on a hosted phone depends on one thing above all: the right civic address on every number. Here is how we handle it, and what we need from you.
What we do
- Every phone number on the platform has a civic address on file.
- 911 calls go out through our Canadian carrier with that number's address registered with the carrier.
- We test our 911 set-up with a test route that ends in a recording, never with a real emergency call.
What the partner does
- Gives us a valid civic address for every number before it goes live.
- Tells us when a customer moves, so the address stays current.
- Passes the warnings below to every customer.
The warnings your customers need
Softphones and mobile apps can be anywhere. 911 sends help to the address on file for the number, not to where the person is. Users who call from a softphone must keep a correct address on file.
911 may not work during a power or internet outage. Hosted phones need power and an internet connection to make any call, including 911.
Compliance
We are confirming with a lawyer which Canadian telecom rules, including CRTC rules, apply to us and to our partners. We will tell each partner in writing what applies to them before they sign. Until then we make no claim of any registration or approval on this site.
